Default Tried to buy a (PC) computer............

............to take to France, where we have had internet connected.

I wanted cheap, so looked for something with around 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, card readers, and a DVD/CD rewriter drive, plus I needed monitor, keyboard and mouse, plus an operating system. It will be used for internet access, storing photos and some music. That's all really. Wife takes her own laptop for work, and I can't use one because of my back

I can't buy one anywhere, or even have one made, and Comet , Dixons, PC World and Currys only want to sell MUCH higher specced stuff for £350 or more Even Amazon only has used in those sorts of specs, or daft expensive ones.

Cool

There's load on eBay for the price you want, and not second hand. The sellers have thousands of positive feedbacks too.

Worht a punt?

LOL, just shows what I know about computers then, I'll have a look.
I've probably left it too late to get for this weekend though, only places like Comet/Currys who have stock, or Amazon who do guaranteed next day delivery, would be any good.

Oh well, next visit. I guess we use the wife's laptop for this one.

That should be a right laff-riot, getting it to work with French internet when it's tied to an LEA wireless system, plus signed in to ours here...........at leat Orange/France Telecom now have a FREE number with English speaking help during office hours.

Maybe I'll try hard wiring it?

Local shop has offered me a deal: bring my old tower unit in, he'll mate it up with a keyboard, mouse and flat screen, plus remove the old CD/DVD drives and fit me a combined one, all for around £120 inc VAT.

Sound OK?

Sometimes the odd decent specced bargain pops up every now again (steer clear of the junk though )

Depends on the monitor ..

You can source a keyboard and mouse for under £10, DVD RW Dual layer for £14.99 and flat screen .. depending on size, for £60 (19 inch)

I dislike Bigpockets, I've bought a couple of things from them and they just go wrong and in one case was definitely a 'second' even though stated as new on the website.

I'm guessing your PC is old and doesn't have Sata so

LiteOn 16x DVDRW DL & Ram IDE Black Bare Drive - OEM - Ebuyer £12.99 for drive

Extra Value Black Optical Mouse - USB - Ebuyer £3.49 for mouse

Black Multimedia Keyboard - USB/PS2 Connection - UK Layout - Ebuyer £3.49 keyboard

19 Inch WideScreen TFT Monitor on eBay, also, Monitors, Computing (end time 18-Jun-09 16:20:59 BST)

Buy it now 19 inch widescreen ... £63.99 I always look for close sales to save on delivery with things like monitors.

The only two bad things I've had from them are a pack of 50 duff DVD-Rs (couldn't record on any of them); of which they refunded no quibbles.

And a mini-RC helicopter. It was a cheap Picooz/Silverlit copy, which was almost identical, barring it had no motor speed control, hence was impossible to control. It was therefore consigned as spare parts for my genuine Picooz heli (motors, batteries and blades etc were identical).

We also have bought two Philips freevent media PCs from there. As new, (basically ex PC world stock). Can't fault them.

My mate did however recieve a dead iPod in a £5 bag o' crap. His face was priceless; Starting off as being well chuffed then quickly turning to pi**ed off after he turned it on only to find the hard drive was dead
