Arrow LINUX HELP REQ'D

Looking for some help / advice on installing Linux on my old desktop..

Downloaded the ISO for Ubuntu which fails to load on my old PC (P4, 200ghz, 20 gig HD, 248MB ram). Also tried to install to my laptop (dual core, 200 gig HD, 2 gig ram) which also failed.

What is the best version of Linux to run? I want to run Linux and would appreciate some help / advice / links to best place to get what I need.

Cheers

Have you tried installing without letting it boot into the live version of Ubuntu? It looks from their website that the live installer needs more RAM.

when you say letting it boot into the live version.. do you mean running off the CD? I tried rebooting with the CD in expecting something to happen and nothing - then I let the CD autorun in windows and attempted to boot via the demo (as this says following the demo you can fully install, which is what I want) but both failed. Doing my head in!

Reason for wanting to go to Linux is that I fixed someone's PC in work for them using my XP disc thinking I would not be needing the licence as my laptops on Vista. Then I've decided to make use of my old desktop as a internet machine for use with my big LCD tv and now I have no licence for my XP install so need an OS to get a browser up and running

If I could buy an XP licence on the cheap I'd do that, just so I can get an OS with an internet browser. It's just the small desktop I have setup is for use with my home cinema / audio setup so that when I switch my source on my big LCD to PC mode I can sit back and be on the net - everything is done minus either...

A) An XP licence
B) a Linux install

I reckon the additonal PC2100 slot i put in has ECC - might work out cheaper to buy another slot of ram to help the Linux install on it's way

Try Xubuntu instead : it's designed for lower spec machines.
