Default 3G USB stick for laptop ?

Looking to buy a hi-speed USB stick for my laptop - the 3G kind that is effectively a mobile phone requiring no local wi-fi or lan to plug into.

So what's the craic with them ?

I see you can buy unlocked models on the web. Am I better doing this , or is it worth getting one from say Vodafone for £39 (1GB free) and unlocking it ? I take it they can be unlocked ?

Do you just whack a new sim card in them ?

Not really sure about the unlocked ones but 2 lads at work just bought the O2 one that's on offer at the moment and they say they perform really well.

thanks chaps - went ahead and got the Vodafone usb stick for £39. Will get it unlocked locally so I can choose which SIM card to use / best reception. Software is quite nice too - it's almost begging me to get the stick unlocked!

3.6Mbps on Pay As You Go
7.2BMbps on contract

I'll only use it for emmergencies - and testing the odd firewall, so it's fine.

Picked up the vodafone one as well last night, again for when out of wifi/network, one thing to watch in the small print is " if not used for 180 days it may be disconnected, then there was something about another 90 days if you reconnect they may reinstate the previous credit making 270 days max with out use before you lose it" worth knowing about.
