Default ARGHHhh all I want to do is convert DVD to AVI!

Why am I having so much trouble!?
I used to use 'Dr Divx' but for some reason I've lost that in a reinstall.
I've tried Handbrake 0.9.3 which looks perfect for what I want but the resultant file just skips through the film in 2second segments. I've also tried Nero Vision but that get's it's knickers in a twist too.
Can anyone help point me in the direction of a free converter?

Matt
