You have DNS hijacker malware on your pc - go download a decent AV / anti spyware app and run it in safe mode

You'll have visited a dodgy site or opened a dodgy email or clicked on one of those "your pc is infected / running slowly / not optimised" bollocks pop ups

Sorry - but you need to get out the broom

Because the virus/trojan may still be running, disabling all sorts of AV, antispyware software. If you run the program in SAFE MODE, nothing will be running apart from the essentials of your system AND the programs you choose to run.

Also, remember to run in SAFE MODE with NETWORKING so that you can update the definitions on the AV/Spyware remover before scanning your system.

If you dont run it updated and in safe mode, you run the risk of not detecting the virus/trojan, etc.

There must be some new slimeware doing the rounds. I've had a sudden influx of people at work wanting help with their home PC's. Usual story, they don't have/use/update any security software, keep windows updated, click on any old cobblers they see. I have one repeat offender that has been through this 3-4 times, and they JUST DON'T LISTEN! Does my foofin head in. They lost all their data the last time, family photo's, music, email, downloaded content, did they have a backup

OP, Ad-aware is a good start. If you don't have an up to date security suite, get one, and update, update, update.

Avira, Kaspersky, Bullguard, Mcafee(I hate it), Norton/Symantec (Not keen)

PC Pro: Product Reviews: Labs: Security suites

You could always use Linux, or a Mac, they have security through obscurity

Conficker b (++) is doing the rounds at the moment. It walloped the network I look after (and it was kept up to date) and has grounded aircraft due to controller p.c.s being stopped.

Right now we're kind of in the middle of one of the greatest Viral oubreaks known and keeping your machine secure is vital

a great tip -- its free and 100% effective is to use a hosts file to redirect websites to a null ip address

you can get them from the internet -- you have to be carefull they are not to big (over 600k) coz it can cause internet to be a bit slow on startup

but it means that all those add sites etc don't even reach your browser
and you can see al the website that use frames redirect to these ****ty site coz they come up as "page not found"

a sample from my hosts looks like this

127.0.0.1 e.abnad.net
127.0.0.1 t.abnad.net
127.0.0.1 banners.absolpublisher.com
127.0.0.1 tracking.absolstats.com
127.0.0.1 adv.abv.bg

I dont understand why its not used more

I fact i go further, on my Router I have static routes set up to route IP networks that apply to china to a null IP's on my network (I have a slighlty more sophisticated way of identifying the network addresses)

the way I see it , when i look at my router logs most of the "attacks" come from these networks and I cant read chinese,

I think it is inevitable that the internet is going to be partitioned off soon anyway -- and we will look back at this phase 1 as being rather quaint
