Thats a very vague question. The files will play if you have the right player/codec and whether it will 'work' (defined as transfer data quickly enough) depends on the interface available on the Mac Book and onthe external drive.

The drive is probably formatted as either FAT32 or NTFS. OS X will mount drives of both formats, however, if it's NTFS, it will be read-only, so you won't be able to copy anything to the drive when it's mounted on a mac. There are products out there that do allow this though.
As for the movies playing, it's possible they might. I'd certainly suggest downloading the free VLC video player as that can play most things. You could also look at the Flip4Mac software, which allows QuickTime to play Windows Media Files.
