I currently have blueyonder broadband and I have a dynamic IP, i seem to recall there was some sort of tool that could allow me to ftp to it without having to know the ip, anyone know what it is~? Bringing me on to...
can anyone suggest a simple FTP program i can set up on my PC, I have never done this and don't really understand it that much.. so a simple one would be nice.. i'm also worried about security.. i have Norton girewall running, How would the FTP work with this .
I need to allow people to download 90mb file from my PC, without it getting hacked to bits

Seriously, if you want to stick with Windoze I think Guild ftpd is probably a good move (check out http://www.nitrolic.com/ ).
Read up re: the security aspects tho!

Try CUTEFTP, it's like using Explorer on a remote system, so you can drag and drop files.
Works for me.
You should be able to configure the firewall to allow traffic through.
FTP uses port 20 for TCP and UDP data packets and port 21 for TCP and UDP control packets, if you enable both of these it will work.
You might prefer to use the ZoneAlarms firewall (which is free for a single user) [http://www.zonealarm.com/ ]and will automatically ask you if you want to enable or disable things as you use them (much easier than Norton).
Hope this helps.

Hi !!
Use www.deerfield.com to find the domain name program called d2g - basically gives you a domain name which constantly gets updated with your latest ip address by using a program that starts up when you turn on your pc.
Great bit of kit cuz now I can run FTP / Email and web servers withouth having to know lots of numbers !

Lo there ,
I think you need to go to http://dns2go.deerfield.com//
This will let your get a hostname that maps to ur dynamic ip address. So u give out hostname and the program running maps it to your ip address as and when it changes.,
Then run something like serv-u or wftpd on your machine.
Should then b ok.
Cheers

Andy,
Do you want to FTP out from your PC or from the outside world into your PC?
If it's the first, then any FTP software should do the trick. I did have some hassles using ZoneAlarm and my Blueyonder homepage. I needed to make sure the FTP connection was set to Passive.
A normal FTP connection goes out on one port#, then comes back in again on a different one. This can confuse the firewall, resulting in it blocking the incoming connection.
If your ftp'ing in the opposite direction i.e. from your work into your PC, then you would need to either have a static IP address, or take note of it as it changes or use something like dns2go to keep track of the change for you.
I use CuteFTP and ZoneAlarm with my Blueyonder connection with no probs.

Sorry Andy, should have read your post a bit more carefully
There's a few FTP Server programs available that would allow you to grant users permissions to individual files/folders on your PC. It would allow you to monitor their connections as well.
You can allow port 21 (FTP) traffic only via your firewall software. This should stop anyone hacking into you.
Most of the decent one's are available through Tucows, but I haven't seen any completely free one's that are good enough - yet anyway.

Bulletproof FTP Server.
Nice and simple to download, 30 day trial avaliable from their website Bullet Proof Web Site
Can create individual accounts with permissions etc, easy to setup!
If you really want to be secure, you could setup your firewall to only allow your Works IP through to port 21.
As for dynamic IP to hostname people like dyndns (cant remeber there URL) provide this service, install an app like Direct Update onto your PC and wheen/if your IP changes it updates the Dynamic DNS info.

Get FlashFxp or cuteFTP
Avi il show you how do do it, if you use VPN or terminal services then u always have an open connection that people can get into!
Don't worry though, everybody already knows u have the words lolita on ur favorites.
Zonealarm is quite a good firewall but i would recommend hardware, like a router rather then software. This way the router is assigned an IP (internet Protocall)address and you can just plug ur other computers straight into it. Thats ur best firewall and thats what im doing.
Routers or the router im on about will cost you £100, they can go anything up to £20000 believe me some are expensive.
E-mail us if you need a hand, we can swap ideas.
I would be interested to know how you can get a website up but can't transfer files? huh?
Heard of dameware? Ask Rik1471 he knows more on me then this, i believe
