iTunes does not allow you to copy music FROM the iPod TO your computer. This is Apple's attempt at copyright protection, as it stops you from plugging in your friends iPod to your computer and copying over their music.
All is not lost however, have a read of this as it details various ways to copy the music from your iPod, to your computer, and then add the items back into iTunes.

You should not need to purchase the songs again.

So what is happening when you try to play them, is it telling you that you're not authorized to play the songs? If so then you simply need to sign in to the iTunes Music Store with the Apple ID you purchased the songs with and you should then be able to play them.
You should not need to purchase the songs again.

Have you authorised the computer on your itunes account?
I think if you go to "store" on the menu and "check for available downloads", it will re-download any tunes you've purchased.
Or something like that... I did it last week, but I wasn't really paying attention.

All purchases have been downloaded for this account.
You can burn a CD,DVD,or use shared folders on your local network to transfer them to another computer.

That's not strictly true. Firstly, not all of the songs on the Store are DRM free yet, I think that by the end of the first quarter this year they should be though. Also, it's not free to download the iTunes+ versions of the songs, you will need to pay, which is probably where his comment about iTunes+ and having to pay to download them again comes from.

All thats happened is they have your history of purchases and are allowing you to upgrade those to DRM free, if you have the songs on an ipod/device somewhere all you need to do is copy them back in using one of the methods listed in the link above and then login to itunes account used to purchase them to allow you to play them.
