Default Looking for software to automate backups

Want to be able to specify folders for weekly incremental and monthly full, at specified times, to external disk.
Would be nice to do windows setting etc as well but not essential.
Willing to pay a bit but not a lot.

Personal recommendations please...?

Need a bit more detail Hank - are you running a Windows / Mac / Linux system and which version?

If its XP have you taken a look a NTBackup as a starting point? Just type ntbackup.exe from the command prompt.

Hank if it is a Windows machine for personal use then you can use the Backup software bundled with.

When you set up the jobs you can define whether it's a full, incremental, differential or whatever. At the same time you can choose the schedule for each job as well.

We actually use NTBackup in a corporate environment to back up the system drive and system state to a flat file and back this up to tape using Backup Exec.

Sorry, should have said - backing up windows vista, built in doesn't have enough control over specific paths and types of backups.

I'm using scheduled robocopies to achieve what I want at the moment but I'd like something with a database that will look up versions as well.

1. Incremental, rolling backup of the main folders of interest capturing changed files.
2. Archived backups of subset to provide point in time snapshots.
3. Occasional archive backups of everything.

Thanks for the input so far

Bit pricey but like the sound of some of the features like:

You can define rules for consolidating your archives to reduce storage space. Merge an older full backup with several incremental backups to quickly create a new full backup; subsequent backups are based on the newly-created full backup.

Will give it a whirl. Thanks for the pointer. Anyone actually using it?

We use it for images rather than Ghost and it's great for that!
Try looking at BackupExec?
