Can't see it being any different from using your ISP's DNS servers.

The data that goes between your computer and whichever DNS server you're using only amounts to something a bit like:

PC: "What's the IP address for www.mybank.co.uk"
DNS: "312.1.2.3"

(admittedly a bit oversimplified and an invalid IP address)

Your computer then asks the webserver at that address directly for the www.mybank.co.uk page.

Yes, DNS servers can be "poisoned" to send traffic to a dodgy site, but that could happen to any DNS server (including your ISP). If you're worried, you can check the details of the site's security certificate in your browser.

The data doesn't pass through the DNS server, just requests for site addresses. As John mentions it is possible for the DNS to be hacked so that when you type in natwest.com it redirects you to a completely different site.

I would say an ISP's DNS is just as likely (or not more so) to be hacked than OpenDNS.

I know it was me that recommended it, but just Google "opendns unsafe". You're quite right to be cautious.
