Default New CPU and Mem - Vista Fails to boot or install successfully

Hi all,

wits end time!! I changed my e6600 to a q6600, tried to reboot and I can only get into vista with safe mode. I tried a repair from the cd, that failed. I tried a fresh install - that failed! Whats going on?!?!?

It fails as the loading bar disapears and you would normally see the vista logo.

After a reinstall it fails at the point where it says starting windows for the first time....

Help!
Ta

P.S - Its vista 64 and 32 bit as have dual boot.....

Did the fresh install include a format? Try that.

Turn on ACPI in the bios to if it isn't on already.

Try an XP install to rule out hardware incompatibility?

PSU under spec perhaps

You might want to check the memory with something like memtest86 too to see if it shows errors Memtest86 - Download Page it's free to download and needs to be burnt to disc, then boot off the disc.

Might need to dive into the BIOS settings and give the RAM voltage a slight boost.

I had to do that to get my new PC to boot. Memtest showed heaps of errors, so I decided to try just half the RAM. That tested fine. I swapped the other half in, and that tested fine too. So I was pretty sure it wasn't faulty RAM.

I gave the voltage a nudge up, and it all tested fine after that.

Did you test the memory in the same slot or in 2 different slots?
Wondering if you have some damage to the memory slot and that is causing errors? hence then it wont reboot up

I've tried raising the RAM and CPU voltages - didn't work.

I put some new mem in, but went back to the old stuff in exactly the same locations.

However - I've cracked it!!!! I've now got it running!!! I turned off Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS and she booted fine

Do I need that on and what on earth does it do? Net says something about power handling characteristics....

It slows the CPU down to save power and can help make the CPU cooler run quietly.
it's unusual to get any problems unless the memory doesn't like it's speed being changed on the fly.

I've just had a similar woes - turns out my motherboards BIOS firmware was 4 versions out of date (brand new board!).

Vista would hang for now reason, lock out all USB devices (like a keyboard & mouse which is handy) and go into an endless circle of booting / shut down / booting / shut down.

BIOS update worked a treat for me.
