Default PS3 firmware updates

How big are they?

Does the console still work okay without a net connection? (obviously not talking about online multiplayer )

I have a strange feeling I'm getting one for christmas (I had to carry the thing home )

It does but there are LOADS of enhancements to get via the upgrades

You can cut a CD with the download from here: Official PlayStation website: System Software on it

Not sure about size, but you get lots of them (seems to be a new one every time I turn my PS3 on), and they usually take between 30-45 minutes to download and install (via my 20mb interweb connection).

The console works fine without a net connection, but the downloaded updates do fix a lot of bugs and add new features.

I know, but that assumes that the PSN sends the updates down the line at the maximum bandwidth. It doesn't (in fact the whole PSN runs very slowly for me at least - Live, pc, and vpn connections all run very quickly on the same line).

Cool

All previous updates are included in the latest, so just download on your PC for speed then put it on a USB stick in e:\PS3\UPDATE (obviously e: could be anything) and then do system update from removable media. Nice and quick.
