Looking at buying a new PC
I am looking at replacing my current PC which is a Mesh AMD Athlon XP1900 running windows XP and it is getting very tired so i was looking at a new PC with about £1000-1200 cost. To get a hopeful 5 year life.
I saw that a Intel i7 920 processor seems to be in the upper priced units and wondered if this was a good buy or would i be better to buy Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550.
I am more interested in a PC with a long life than a games machine and the most demanding things will be video editing and photo software other than that surfing the net.
Has any body any advice?

Are you building this system yourself mate from individual parts or are you looking for a ready-made system with these CPU's already in?
Just been looking now mate and from what Ive been reading they both have quad core and mostly all the same spec. But for what you want I would choose the Q9550 only because it has a higher clock speed (2.83GHz compared to 2.66GHz of the i7 920.)
A quote from one of the websites where I checked out the Q9550,
"Intel Advanced Digital Media Boost - Accelerating a broad range of applications, including video, speech and image, photo processing, encryption, financial, engineering and scientific applications."
The Q9550 seems to be the best choice as it has all the above technology and features to improve photo editing, video processing etc.

Dell Studio XPS.
The slower clocked i7 (2.66GHz) is better than the Q9550. Gives it a proper hiding actually
The dell is less that £700, comes with blu ray and 4GB of RAM (although 3 or 6GB makes more sense as you can run it in tripple channel as opposed the older dual channel DDR2).
The graphics card won't be a world beater but more than enough for your suggested needs and blu ray. It's small and quiet, and cheap as chips for what you get
