...customise the cell spacing around a table so the horizontal spacing is different to the vertical spacing around the cells ?

CSS Border-spacing Property

Hope you're using tables for tabulated data and not layout

Only in my dreams as whenever I use <divs> to place stuff on the page it's never where I want it. Overlapping, off the screen! Everywhere but... And always different in every browser!

I've yet to find a tutorial that explains it WRT what I want to do - woe is me

kernal, once you move to CSS design you will never use a table again, even for tabular data

Keep trying as once you get your head around how it works it's awesome.

I downloaded a few templates and then spent some time dicking around on the site linked above:
CSS Introduction

Very helpful and as DW said, once you get a handle on it, you won't go back!

I use CSS all the time but still use tables. Saying that I've never come across a tutorial for using the equivalent in CSS. Until now, so I've googled this...

Liquid CSS Layouts - Design Alternative to Table Based Websites - Accessible Web Design

So I'll blast through it, and see if I prefer it.
