I need it replacing (for a bigger one), and we have a policy that means we get a new for old.
How can I make it faulty without it being obvious that i deliberately broke it ??

Thanks

Andy

A large magnet should do the trick.

Wink

Try removing some of the files that make it boot. In that way, its deemed u/s etc etc

Slightly dependant on the eficiency of yout IT dept!

Alternately turn it on & off lots of times whilst processing large disk-writes. bound to **** something eventually

Static? 240v across the power-socket or data cable? 9v battery & some connectors & connect it across various components on the pcb until it fails?

Obviously spillage works, but how about a few grains of very fine sand or salt or simillar on the spindle? (Wear away until fails)

Disclaimer

I'm not in any way responsible for the actions of any indevidual who may read this light-hearted way at destroying a hard-drive and I would never ever condone sabotage of any sort and especially in the work-place.

We once had someone bring in a hard drive that had been attacked with a tin opener - apparently he was trying to spin it up by hand

Thumbs up

I can send you a rather nasty mailbomb (anonymously of course )that will rip your harddrive to pieces

Failing that, WinNuke usually does the trick It can mash boot sectors.

Cool

Jack

Once met an MCNE who'd been sad enough to take one to pieces & replace the metal covering of the platters with clear plastic so that he could watch the arms moving

Take it out, take the case off exposing the platters - sneeze - put it back together. Alternatively turning on and off repeatedly should do the trick

I accidently killed one once - take it out of the case, rest the exposed PCB on the metal case, reconnect power and IDE cable, turn on. Waitr a few minutes, check for "knackeredness" (TM), put it all back together and away you go.

Should do the trick nicely

I worry about you Andy, but connecting it straight to the mains for a bit should get you a new one

Ooooh, I just connected an old mains adaptor from a printer onto the power plug (Slid straight on - It's from a deskjet 895 if anyone wants to know ) Made a nice little fizzle sound. I'll see if it works later

Andy

Tried a massive magnet and it still worked

Oh the joys of Premier [insert pc manufacturers name] Support (Incase someone works for them )

Nope.. definetely not working

And the mains is fine (Allthough there's probably not even a fuse to blow with this dodgy wiring )

You did backup/remove all useful data on it before you toasted it?

Didn't you?

just take the lid off (so you can see the platters and head assembly) and put it back (without rounding the screws), voila... one knackered drive!
