Why does my homepage keep defaulting to........
Problem loading page
this instead of Google? Then, some websites refuse to open. Even the above dispalys a "page cannot be found" message
I'm on Vista, using IE.

Domain Name Server, it's the remote computer that tells you computer where a website is located, it sends back an IP address telling your computer where to look.
Normally you wouldn't have to change any DNS settings on your computer, you should check with your ISP.
It is also possible that pages are timing out for some other reason.
Do you have a wireless network?
Do you have anything like Bittorrent hogging the connection?

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have a wireless network but the PC that's playing up is hardwired to it
Nothing like Bittorrent.
I'll give that AVG page a try next time it happens.

Disabling the error redirection doesn't cure the error.
If you have a WiFi network that isn't secured people will use/abuse it, if theres too much traffic then you start to have problems.
Are the other PC's getting web pages up ok, or are they lagging a bit.

It is secured, and the other computers are experiencing no problems.
This has only started happening since I bought a new computer which is running Vista, and AVG8.0

Also do this..
Go to start and click on run. Type in "cmd" and click OK. Type in netsh int ip reset filename.txt then click enter.
One of the components of the Internet connection on your computer is a built-in set of instructions called TCP/IP. TCP/IP can sometimes become corrupted, this sorts it.
Then
Go to start and click on run. Type in "cmd" and click OK. Type in ipconfig /flushdns
Sometimes a bad DNS entry will be cached, this will flush the DNS Resolver Cache

First problem is you have AVG installed (I've seen it cause problems like this on a number of occasions). Try uninstalling it and installing something like Nod32 instead.
The operation elevation error is happening because you need an administrative command prompt (a normal one hasn't sufficient priviledges).
Go to start and type cmd (don't press the enter key)
Find the command prompt entry in the start menu list (typing in cmd should have found it for you), right click on it, and select "Run as administrator".
From this point, you should be able to use those netsh / ipconfig commands.
