Does anyone have an old Windows installatin disk I can borrow ?

My drive has failed and the XP disk I have is an upgrade and won't install without proof of the old O/S

Just put XP on without doing upgrade version, its rubbish.
As it is your drive can be read and data recovered for a back up of documents etc.
Install a fresh copy of XP not an upgraded version.
Run a linux live disc to retrieve your docs etc to USB pen or burn it off. Then format your disc. I will send you info via pm if you like.

There was only XP on the disk - all data is on other drives.

I just need to re-install XP, but can't as it's an upgrade version.....

The XP upgrades were crap from release. This is not my opinion its fact. I have a super lightweight XP Pro which you could get from torrents, wink wink, un rar it and burn the ISO, about 129mb for a full install with SP3.
I cant give the link but torrent search it, tis fantastic and is a full version from install. Also passes WGA but you have a licence so that not a problem
