bit torrent client - what do you use?
Every since Utorrent updated it's not worked properly (torrents I know have loads of seeds just sit there not downloading )
So I went back to Azureus (now called Vuze) and that's now so full of cr@p that it slows the PC down to a stop!
Are there any other torrent cliets people would recommend?

Poor speeds in Utorrent ?
Use the following:
Utorrent NEW update for version 1.7.7 and 1.8 to go faster
YouTube - Utorrent NEW update for version 1.7.7 and 1.8 to go faster
PeerGuardian 2
Phoenix Labs PeerGuardian 2

utorrent 1.81 + Peerguardian
Just remember to limit your upload to 80% of your upload speed. Don't forget to fix the inbound port & open it in your firewall.

I use uTorrent 1.8.1, unlike some clients this one hardly uses any system resources unlike some hoggers ive had in the past. Ive never had a problem at all with uTorrent.

I hated Vuse's attempts to be like the bit torrent version of Itunes.
Tried reinstallings Utorrent and did all that stuff linked on Youtube, still just sat there (the relevant ports were open).
Downloaded a client called Deluge which reminds me of how Azureus was before it got all bloated. Working a treat now

You have to pay for a good service, but that's the same with most things - torrents are free, but look at the downsides: very slow, probably fake (old movies pretending to be new, courtesy of a rename) and the (OK, pretty slim) chance of a writ dropping through your letterbox...
With newsgroups, especially those offering SSL, you'll be very hard pushed to determine what the heck end-users are downloading let alone ever see a writ for doing so, a good server will max your connection (as ND says, I max out my 20Mb Virgin cable from Newshosting in the US) and what-you-see-is-normally-what-you-get.
For the princely sum of about £8 a month I get secure 20Mb downloads of whatever I want... and, for me, it's easily worth it over the hassle, slow speed and risk of using torrents (or other peer-peer networks).
So - Usenet all the time...
Those that can, Usenet, those that can't, Torrent...

I'm with Norman Dog - go for usenet - especially with the recent reports of torrent users being sued by record companies, etc.

Yes, if you use public trackers and dload illegal content you are opening yourself up to arrest and also poor speeds. So Usenet is only better then if you're willing to pay But there is still a risk using it.

Right, let's settle this.
Same File.
Typical Bit Torrent Download Speed - 128 kB/s
Typical Usenet Download Speed - 9.4 Mb/s (1.2MBps)
Yes, you do have to pay for it, but let's face it - for the sake of US$ 24.99 per month for UNLIMITED downloads, I know which I prefer.

All you've managed to prove there is that your IP addess is 77.98.199.32, you're with Blueyonder, you like Sunderland pr0n & transvestite comedy and that the police will be knocking on your door in the hour

The way I see it . . .
Bittorrent
+ Free
+ Fast with private trackers
+ Simple
+ Good availability
- Slow with public trackers
- Not secure
- Traceable by anyone
- More susceptible to fakes and viruses
- Redistribution of files
- Relies on tracker/seed availability
Newsgroups
+ Fast
+ More secure
+ Safer files
+ No redistribution
+ Robust framework
+ Simple once understood
- Costs for good retention
- Costs for secure connection
- Can lack file availability
Torrents are still frowned upon by the release groups and deemed 'for n00bs', but there are more torrent-only release groups appearing now.
There are some TV shows that I can't get with the newsgroup service I pay for and have to use private torrent trackers to get them as thats where they're released and they don't want then shared elsewhere. I need both methods.

How private are the private trackers?
What's to stop someone representing the record companies joining a private tracker and monitoring who's making files available on it?
Or have I missed the point and do torrents over private trackers work completely differently from those available publicly?

Absolutely, they're not private and there's nothing to stop someone from copyright agencies, record or film companies from signing up, except where their IP address ranges are known.
Many rely on invite only systems now, to try and restrict unknown entities from joining up.
