Default Good mobo/CPU/memory combo ?

Hi all

Yes I am being slack and still havent ordered the parts for the new PC. About a month ago I decided on the following mobo/CPU/memory combo...

CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Mobo - Asus P5Q-E Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express
Memory - GeIL 8GB (4x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel

Total cost of about £315. A month on, does that seem like a good way to go or is there a better combination I should go for at a similar cost ?

Your memory will let you down there, the 6600 is a good cpu though, if your on a budget then go for it, the mobo is also a good buy, but you need to be running the 8500 ddr2 (its 8500/8=1066) so it matches your fsb for the best combo.
Also on your memory, get the lowest cas, ie 4-4-4-12 is better than 5-5-5-15

Sorry to say it again but that is wrong.

PC6400 rated FSB is 800Mhz but that actual FSB is 2x 400MHz = 800MHz

The Q6600 rated FSB is 1066MHz but it's actual FSB is 4x 266MHz = 1066MHz

Long story short is the PC6400 RAM is enough to overclock the Q6600 to 3.6GHz without even overclocking the RAM.

If you aren't overclocking you could pontentially run as little as PC4200 but I would stick with the PC6400

PC8500 holds little or no advantage even running a better divider than 1:1.

And the black dragon stuff is awesme with the red led dragon eyes

Mike, on the 800mhz and over clocking to multiplier of 9, yes its better than the 8500, but its not as good as 1600mhz ram
If your keeping the system standard then the 8500 is far better than the 6400, and why? simple, bandwidth.
800mhz is restrictive, the cpu runs a 1066mhz bus, run 1066mhz memory and its at its ultimate.
I can vouch that 800mhz on that 1066mhz fsb is slow, its the only thing that I need to up on the standard cpu, if I were to overclock to 3.6ghz (the fsb should be 1600 then) then I would for a short time stick to the 800mhz, but thats still restrictive.

If you run vista, run the application to see how good your system is the one score mine drops on is the memory, and its quick memory.

Hi Tony, I'm looking for a similar setup, using the Q6600, ATI 4850 and the best RAM for this setup. Are you saying if this chip is overclocked, I need to order faster memory, if so which memory and motherboard would be best?

I intend to order from CCL as they are local to me in case of any issues.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

The best memory for you will be the lowest latency PC8500 DDR2 1066mhz memory
Have a read of this article, Prototyped explains how the memory works perfectly and shows you where the 8500 comes from

I was thinking about how to explain cycles (266mhz x 4 per cycle) and bandwidth, but that article does it precisely

Important to match FSB and memory speed nowadays? - Topic Powered by eve community
