general opinion?
all,
Whats the general opinion on which is more senior (this is in a corporate business, several thousand staff) and which pays more:
A technical services manager role, with 10+ support staff
Or
A technical architect role, with no staff (and only tech arch in the business)
Thanks,
K.

I have seen tech architects way higher than tech service managers as they can actually be involved in the strategic direction of technology rather than *just* supporting it. If there is only one, he/she could be viewed with a fair bit of seniority.

They tend to work for completely different parts of the organisation and have different responsibilities: So the Technical Services is more 'senior' but the Technical Architect is probably paid more as it is more specialised.

I've been faced with the decision about which branch to take - man management or senior technical. I tried the management role (Team Leader for 5) and didn't suit it. I'm now in a Security Specialist role and earning more money. I'm involved in more 'senior' work than I was before and spend my days talking to client directors and technical managers and am now being farmed out to multiple contracts.
The title (engineer) sounds like a demotion but the work is a definite step up
