So you don't want any of the free stuff I told you about...?

TBH, if you don't know what you want, you don't want photoshop, it's a major commitment to both purchase and learn.

It's a very expensive purchase for home use. Try paintshop pro instead.

Adobe's Creative Suite sounds like it might be what you're after. It includes Photoshop and Illustrator, which is a vector line type application, ideal for design.

I'm pretty sure there is a free 30 day trial available for download, or order on DVD for the creative suite package, so I'd strongly recommend you give it a look.

** edit **
Free trial download can be found here. You need to download the apps separately (you'd want Photoshop and Illustrator), or you can order a trial DVD. Creative Suite Design Standard is probably the package you want.

It's very similar altho not as powerful, however it's a fraction of the price. As Markus states you can get trials for pretty much any program so try them all, be aware though CS3 (Creative Suite) carries a hefty price tag for home use.

Unfortuanately in reality no one package does it all, and you'll find that people who design on a professional level will be using several different packages to achieve the results they require.

Is this just a hobby or are you looking for a career in design/art ?

It's certainly not as good as photoshop. However, the average user will not use the extra features that photoshop provides, and so spending the extra money is fairly pointless. It all depends on what you want to use it for

If you find somewhere let me know

Swindon really is rubbish for this sort of thing, and PC world is really the best place in the town unfortunately. That's why I buy everything over the interweb...
