RM Asus Eee minibook, Are they any good?
Looking at purchasing one of these to take on holiday to Canada, and was wondering what peoples views are on them? This is the one I was thinking of getting:
RM Asus miniBook 8GB HD/1GB memory/Black - Win XPH General InformationRM Asus miniBook
8GB Hard Drive
1GB memory
Black
Windows XP Home
This one only has the 7" LCD screen, as I have seen that a newer model is coming out with 8.9" LCD and the Intel Atom CPU being actually clocked @ 900mhz instead of the 600Mhz this model boasts.
What I' hoping to use it for:

For the same money, consider the Acer Atom. I had a play with one of these, very good!!!
Bigger LCD than the EEEPC, and the same money. Try both before buying.
And the Acer Atom had a 20 second boot up. All in all, its your choice.
Both are good in their own way.
I believe the Atom is 1.6ghz.

Actually the EEE PC is available in 8.9" and 10" screens now.
I bought the EEE PC 901 (8.9", 1.6GHz Intel Atom) as I've already got a proper laptop - so I use the 901 as my little travel laptop - perfect for your requirements above.
Mine's got the solid state hard drive (no moving parts, 5 hour battery life)
Mine came with Linux, which I took off and installed WinXP.
There's a decent review on CNET...

I have the 701, it's spot on for me. Just put XP on, RomRaider and a OpenPort cable...got it logging all sorts of magic data from in the car.
The screen is a tad small, but it'll do for me!

XP runs spot on - speakers a fine - it also comes with audio out for headphones and webcam is 1.3Mega Pixel so fine for Skype, etc...
I'd got for the 901 which has the new Intel Atom processor - super efficient. If you want a 10" screen look at the Asus EEE PC 1000 or MSI Wind
The 901 comes in two flavours - Windows XP or Linux - only the Linux one has solid state hard drive.
Some people don't like the small keyboard - personally I find it fine, but if you intend to do a lot of typing/work you might want to get the EEE PC 1000 or MSI Wind.

I've done some data logging, copied the log file to my USB stick, then plotted in excel etc on my main PC. I plan to write a c# app to do some proper plotting real time(ish).
Downloads - OpenECU
Using RomRaider, ECUExplorer, EcuEdit and also LogWorks for LC1/LM1 logging.
Sorry for hijack

Just read some reviews and people who bought the Windows version are complaining about the split drives and how the 4GB drive fills up too quickly when being updated.

Just been reading up about it on the Dell website looks okay but noticed it shares the same case as the Asus, with the Asus being cheaper with a 20GB SSD but with Linux. Just need to know if it will be easy to put Win XP on instead of the Linux O/S.

Not really, just need to look at the specs of each one. They are mostly the same Read recently that Intel plan to bring out a dual processor ATOM processor at somepoint, so will get even more confusing

Well at the moment from what I have read up the Asus appears to have better battery life which from what I can gather can vary between 3 - 6 hours depending on what you use it for. The ATOM CPU only uses 2Watts of Power.

I bought an Advent 4211 today and chose it over the Acer Aspire One due to the slightly larger screen and the keyboard feels better to use.
Shame it only came with the three cell battery which givees 2.5 hours.
i'm now busy Googling for either another 3 or 6 cell.

Amazon £299 - I went for the black XP version.
Seem to be pretty much the same price everywhere that actually has them in stock.

I read a few reviews like that, but the general concensus was that people liked them.
Not sure why they didn't go for the same discs on both.....
I also briefly considred the 904 for the 80Gb disc, but decided to go for the lighter weight longer battery option & a separate portable USB drive for when I need it.

Been reading up on that model and a lot of people are having issues with the split SSD drives. The Win XP sits on the 4GB SSD which can fill-up when doing updates apparrently. Was looking at the LINUX version which has a single 20GB SSD drive, and then wipe off the LINUX and install Win XP etc...
All down to cost - the XP licence means you lose 8Gb of storage....
