Default Vista: 64 Bit

Hello

I have to reinstall Vista for various "Ive installed too much dodgy software" reasons. Has the 64 bit version calmed down now? Do most things work?

I use 64bit with no issues. My only problem was that most of the cracked stuff didn't so I actually had to buy software

I don't use that much software (cracked or otherwise) these days. It was the simple things like Yahoo Messenger that didn't work properly.

I will give it a go and see!

Thanks,

Steve

Okay, thank you. It is installed now (and I'm typing this from it) and everything seems okay. It is busily downloading 500mb of updates.

Its mostly fine, I've been using since it was first launched, and tbh it was no big deal back then (we had XP64 before that, which was more problamatic IMO ). I think most companies have finally pulled their fingers out with regards to x64 support.

Only one thing that could remain a problem is if you want to use hacked/unsigned drivers.

I'm using it. The only compelling reason for using it is when you need a lot of RAM.

Talking of which ... I thought if I used 64 bit I would get the full 4GB?

I still only have 3.3gb showing?

Weird. What motherboard / system do you have? It's possible that you have a 32 bit northbridge I suppose.

I have a HP DC7600. Apparently it doesn't support 64Bit (although Vista is working fine).

Ah, so it'll probably have a 64 bit processor but only a 32 bit memory controller.

You need to check the Bios and board specs, if its a i945, forget it. If its a later chipset then there maybe an option in the BIOS (memory remap, or something along those lines)

The Intel 945 chipset (or similar) reserves some of the memory addresess between 3.2to 4gig for system usage (PCi bus, HD controllers Gfx, etc). So can't be used. Its a hardware issue...BIOS updates won't cure it

I've had the same issue...Asus P5LD2...specs clearly state that it will support 4gig of RAM. But nowhere did it say it could not USE all of it

I'm sure it breaches trades descriptions

I'd like to know how thats possible on a i945 chipset to USE all 4gig, as far as I know its physically impossible due to the hardware acrhitecture.

(BIOS and Vista always detects the 4gig though, but only 3.2gig of which is available for the system to use).

Had a few drink last night lol... should of explaned a little more. there was a way to get it to show but i cant find it right now, will have a chek later,

The system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect if 4 GB of RAM is installed

boxst, on my ASUS board you have to enable "Memory Remapping" for the full 4GB to be visible.
Vista 64 works a treat here, no going back now
