Vista: 64 Bit
Hello
I have to reinstall Vista for various "Ive installed too much dodgy software" reasons. Has the 64 bit version calmed down now? Do most things work?

I don't use that much software (cracked or otherwise) these days. It was the simple things like Yahoo Messenger that didn't work properly.
I will give it a go and see!
Thanks,
Steve

Its mostly fine, I've been using since it was first launched, and tbh it was no big deal back then (we had XP64 before that, which was more problamatic IMO ). I think most companies have finally pulled their fingers out with regards to x64 support.
Only one thing that could remain a problem is if you want to use hacked/unsigned drivers.

You need to check the Bios and board specs, if its a i945, forget it. If its a later chipset then there maybe an option in the BIOS (memory remap, or something along those lines)
The Intel 945 chipset (or similar) reserves some of the memory addresess between 3.2to 4gig for system usage (PCi bus, HD controllers Gfx, etc). So can't be used. Its a hardware issue...BIOS updates won't cure it
I've had the same issue...Asus P5LD2...specs clearly state that it will support 4gig of RAM. But nowhere did it say it could not USE all of it
I'm sure it breaches trades descriptions

I'd like to know how thats possible on a i945 chipset to USE all 4gig, as far as I know its physically impossible due to the hardware acrhitecture.
(BIOS and Vista always detects the 4gig though, but only 3.2gig of which is available for the system to use).

The system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect if 4 GB of RAM is installed
