Default Surely this can't be right - my upstream is faster than my downstream?

Am I just being really thick here, or am I correct in thinking that my downstream speed should be faster than my upstream speed?

I'm clocking these results:

Speed Down 124.23 Kbps ( 0.1 Mbps )
Speed Up 369.28 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

thinkbroadband :: Broadband Speed Test Results

Any ideas?

Only time I've seen that consistently was using a pair of ethernet over mains adapters. Normally you'd expect as you suggest.

Run this test Test Result

Looks like your ip profile has dropped. It might need a few calls and profile reset. Thats same I was getting.

My isp is UKOnline but my phoneline is BT. It took BT 11 days to get off their ***** to reset my ip profile

Pimmo, I'm on VM and get 1.9 down and 0.2 up.
Is 0.2 up what it should be on the 2mb package?
Should I be able to get upgraded for free easily?
I've been with VM/NTL for years now with full TV package (sports/movies)...
(Apologies for thread hijack)

Have you had adsl before from another provider?

Your upload speed is about right for ADSL but you've got a huge impairment on the download.

You either live a long way from the exchange in which case the line attenuation is >60dB or you've a problem on the line which is impacting the signal to noise ratio.

Have you connected your adsl modem to the bt master socket? Try removing the front plate and connect inside because this will isolate all the extension sockets. Have you got microfilters installed on all extensions?

Have a read through these two website:

::. Kitz - ADSL Information .::

-=| adsl.yesyes.info |=- - myHome

These should give you some ideas. Ideally you need to post the stats from your router so that we can see the line attenuation, signal to noise, etc.

Cheers, Mark

I'm getting the following:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 288 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 112 kbps

I've had SKY before, but that was even slower than BT.

How do I know which is the mastersocket? I have one by the front door and one in the lounge on the ground floor, plus one in each bedroom on the first floor. All sockets look identical, none have a BT logo or split into two parts.

I've only got a micro-filter installed on the one socket in the house which is connected for the broadband (the SKY box also plugs into this socket). I've got a couple of spare microfilters which I can try plugging in if anyoe thinks that would help.

I'll have a read of the other saites when I have a bit more time.
Thanks, guys.

I've just plugged in a different router (Belkin) and now I have these results:

thinkbroadband :: Broadband Speed Test Results

Date 06/08/08 13:05:23
Speed Down 441.84 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Speed Up 241.72 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

Much faster, but now it thinks I'm connected to Virgin Media not BT - Virgin haven't laid cable on my street.

To know your master socket, unscrew the face if it has a capacitor in it then its the master, secondary sockets dont have them. This shows you what Im going on about.

I rewired my whole house by myself, its not rocket science its **** easy. BT did fit an ADSL V.1 box and face place that gave no end of problems with line drop and line noise so I remove it. Replaced it with a standard master socket and secondary sockets, now crystal clear phone line and no line drops.

Are you over you monthly limit? It looks as though you are being capped: does it go up after midnight?

I have an unlimited plan so shouldn't be capped.

Have contacted Virgin as their 20mb deal with line rental and tv will work out cheaper than BT/Sky combined.

It still might be 'shaped'. Shaped isnt capped you see? Now that 'shaping' is pissing people off a few ISPs have started 'modelling' their traffic. Eventually it will become clear that they were actually 'shafting' us.....

Perhaps its a contention issue or an exchange problem. Both tend to disappear when you raise a ticket, especially if you appear to be technically knowledgable.

I checked one site and the local exchange was showing a red status for traffic on a 2 mile (direct) line. They are apparently going to fix it by the 18th. Unlikely
