Default Free Email

I am setting up a basic laptop for my mum to use and she wants email on it.

It has Outlook Express which she has occasionally used on another computer but this laptop is on PAYG Broadband with Three at the moment does anybody know of a basic free email that i can set up to work with the outlook express on the laptop, i think Hotmail etc will just make things more confusing as she will lose things whilst she is typing if the connection drops etc.

any help will be much appreciated

GMX - Free E-Mail - Webmail & POP3, IMAP

You can use as webmail or set up POP3 access. I use it for my N95 email.

You could use Gmail and configure it to forward emails via POP, at which point you'd then configure OE to connect to Gmail. This would allow send/receive from within outlook, and they need never actually go to the web interface of Gmail. She should not lose anything if the connection drops in this situation as it's all being done locally via OE, all that would happen would be an error when you try and send, so you wait and send it when the connection is back up.

Use IMAP instead of POP with Gmail, it keeps the web client and your local inbox in sync.
