No sound on HP Pavillion DV8000

No sound on HP Pavillion DV8000
Right...
Down in Chester for the weekend to see the GFs parents. Her dad has an HP Pavillion DV8000. It's a top notch laptop but the sound has suddenly stopped working! It has stero speakers and both are no working. However, if you plug headphones in ther is sound through those. I'v checked the obvious things like the audio olume control and properties but it all looks OK.
Anybody got any ideas how to get the sound back?

Doesn't that model have audio / video controls above the keyboard ??
there is a mute button somewhere at the top right which simply shuts off the sound completely. I think it is backlit orange if muted.
