Default Laptop problem.cant move cursor...

My laptop has started playing up and will not allow me to move the cursor with either the touchpad or the mini stick in the middle of the keyboard. The way I get around it is shut the lid let it power down and open again, that works but sometimes I have to shut it and open 3 or 4 times before the cursor will move.
Is there anything I can do to stop this happening or is it just a sign my laptop is knackered. It is a Dell Latitude D600
Thanks

First port of call is always a driver update.

Go get the system drivers for that model and re-install them. See how that goes.

If you have a suite of apps installed - de-install them and install a freshly downloaded set.

There used to be a know issue with older Dell latops with the glue melting around the ribbon cable that controls the mouse pad etc. IF its still under warrenty (and the driver update does not work) I would ring Dell and they will send you a new keyboard and mouse pad under warrenty.
