How to set up a PS3 for online multiplayer?
Hi all, I'll start by sayin I dont have a clue when it comes to networks etc ...but i'd like to play my PS3 online.
What exactly do I need to do? I have an ADSL modem that was supplied when I signed up to wanadoo broadband. So if i'm not using my pc at the time, can I just plug the ethernet cable into that modem? Or do I need to buy a seperate one?
All advice appreciated
Cheers, Alan

hopefully your modem has a usb port also. You can run the pc from the usb and use the ethernet port for the ps3.Saves swapping cables. But yes you can just swap out the pc for the ps3 as the modem holds all the isp info.
I use a bthome hub which luckily has 2 ethernet ports and a usb one.
Then its just a matter fo going to the ps3 settings for network and tell it to autodetect.

Or get a wireless router and do away with the cables altogether.
Alternatively if you want to stick with the cabled route then you can always look at the homeplug solution (using the power lines to move the BB signal around the house).

Note that most modems only have one connection enabled. So, if you connect the usb and ethernet ports, you may find that it disables one of them.
The best option is to use a wireless router.

Ok, thanks for the replies guys! I thought there might be increased lag when going wireless? ...or have things moved on since I last played online

The performance of a wireless connection depends on a lot of things, signal strength, distance from the router, interference and (believe it or not) atmospheric conditions.
However with a strong signal (>80% signal strength) the performance in my experience is good enough for gaming using the PS3.

Well i've been out today to a local computer shop that I always use, and they are spot on. Only problem was the owner wasnt there...instead just someone managing the till.
I bought an ethernet cable though because I know I need one of those anyway
The cable fits into a socket at the back of my pc, creating an LAN, which I thought would give the PS3 broadband seeing as my computer has it. Instead it says the LAN has "limited or no connectivity". So am I daft for thinking that would work? Or could it work but i've just not set it up right?
