Default iPod Backup?

I have an iPod Classic 160Gb with a huge amount of tunes and artwork on it.

I've made a lot of changes to tags and artwork directly on the iPod (rather than in iTunes) so wouldn't want to have to start all over again if it got lost or damaged.

Can anyone recommend any software to backup my iPod to a local drive. I don't mind if it writes to an encrypted single file, so long as I could restore it if need be.

Thanks.

Thinking about it, I can see the iPod as a local drive. If I copied the entire contents would that be a restorable alternative?

If you disbale autosyncing within iTunes, you should be able to use the iPod to update iTunes instead of the other way around.

If you connect it and enable disk use, you can browse to the folder structure that contains all the media and just copy it off.

As others have said if you can see it as a disk then the music could be copied off just using windows explorer. If you want you could get an app such as Anapod Explorer (check it works with the new classic iPods though) to copy the contents from the iPod into a folder on your desktop.

As it's a disk you could also possibly create an image of it as well.

Even though you'll see the Ipod as a local drive, you shouldn't be able to see the music folders (they're usually hidden to "protect" from piracy)

I use Ipod Access - you can then download/backup whatever you want

Works with the new Ipods and Iphone too
