Default I think I've found a really cheap high spec Dell laptop

I just about to buy a new machine and stumbled on this Dell. I was looking at HP and other vendors, but the spec and price of this machine seem to be at least £200 less than other manufacturers. Anyone think I am missing something here?

Oh, and if anyone just happens to have some promo codes going for Dell that would be appreciated

I'm guessing one downside is that there are two harddrives in there rather than one. That means more heat, noise and weight compared to one. I also don't think the DVDRW is lightscribe compatible, which is a shame.

Need to check if its gigabit LAN, but I fear not.

Not sure about whether VAT is on that, but I bought a Vostro 1700 about 2 months ago and its been excellent.

Can't recommend them enough, superb spec for the cash.

Mine was £600 all in, v similar spec to that one apart from 2Ghz CPU and smaller single hard-drive - oh and at the time they threw in a 9-cell battery.

The price quoted is without delivery or VAT. However they are doing an offer that gives free delivery. As it is for a business we can reclaim the VAT.

Thanks for the comments, I'll have a chat with them tomorrow about the last couple of things I could not find out from the website. Looks like I will be going with that one. I always find Dell a hard place to shop at, that is actually the most expensive Vostro, but as it does not need configuring it actually ends up being cheaper than the lower spec machines

why would you want that? I can only see downsides really. I suppose you could flip a drive out into another machine to move data about quickly, but...well...even still

That's a pretty good deal actually considering the spec. I have ordered an IBM T61p as I needed something a bit more business like and with enough grunt to meet my coding and graphics & design demands.

PC Pro: News: Dell Vostro keyboards cause confusion

Another brand worth checking out is Novatech (Laptop Ranges : Computer Supplies and PC Components from Novatech) - they do some really smart laptops, the x80r shares the same hardware as the more pricey Rock X770 laptop and is a serious powerhouse when it comes to gaming and acting as a desktop replacement.

I've got a T61p thinkpad for work to, very nice lappy. Bit of a brute and on the heavy side thou And the screen isn't the best, suffers a bit from graining. Apart from that, very nice indeed.
