Default Next PS3 Firmware Update

PlayStation.Blog » Firmware (v.2.30) Details and Store Walkthrough

I'm looking forward to this one as it contains DTS-HD audio output.

"DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound"

Just want multi region DVD playback now and I'm sorted.

I've noticed a few recent firmware flashes - I could swear the last was 2.2 - when does 2.30 come out?

and yep - it'll be nice to let Onkyo stretch its legs won't it?

Quote from site:
The PS3 can decode and down-mix the DTS-HD. The audio signal down-mixes to the core DTS (5.1) or PCM (2.0) when using the optical cable. Keep in mind that the A/V receiver needs to support the core DTS in order for it to decode the signal.

Does that mean it also works via optical

My Denon 1906 has no HDMI but has 2 optical in.

It means that if you play a DTS-HD soundtrack through optical the PS3 downmixes it to regular DTS. I believe the latest HD audio codecs only work through HDMI I'm afraid, as optical can't carry enough information.

Firmware is out 15th - the PS Store update will be a week later.

The audio update is going to be DTS HD MA for Dolby 7.1. Time to go shopping for a new amp & speakers !!!

I'm not sure that is correct. Optical connections run at the speed of light and can carry huge amounts of information. In fact just recently some scientists did an experiment where an optical connection managed to transfer data at a sustained rate of 16.4Tbs (over a distance of 1500 miles).

Limiting the codecs to hdmi is just a devious plan to force everyone to buy new hardware (probably Sony branded).

I should imagine its much more to with DRM than any forced new hardware purchases.

I'm not sure its a big enough leap from 5.1 under DTS/DD to "force" me to replace my 6.1 Amp that doesn't have HDMI input.

I've been after a new amp anyway - my current one is about 8 years old now, (Sony STR DB 940) and its been great, does me just fine really but the only thing thats lacking is HDMI input. I could get an HDMI switcher (I have 3 devices but the TV only has 2) but there's not a huge difference price wise beween a decent switchbox and a decent amp.

7.1 is way more than I need as I simply dont have the room - but I am interested in the new codecs as what BR already chucks out via the PS3 is much better than you usually find on DVD.

As for the PS3 taking over this year? Well, I wouldn't be surprised as I'd say the momentum is certainly with it, but Sony need to get Home sorted and a decent controller - and I don't mean DualShock 3.

I've got hold of a dual shock 3, and can confirm that it's just as rubbish as the old one. It's exactly the same, just with some mild rumble...

I hate the PS controllers. I'd consider a PS3 at the end of this year to go with t he 360 but not if I have to use the kids controller.

Does the extra weight make it feel any better than the feeble other one?

I'm guessing the battery doesn't hold its charge for nearly as long?

I've not timed it, but the battery definitely runs out quicker, and the pad is slightly heavier to hold. Other than that, it's exactly the same. The extra weight doesn't make it feel any better at all imo...
