Default New Laptop

My PC died yesterday and I have no real want to repair it and as I want to save space, I have decided to get a laptop.

Main requirements are:

Internet Browsing
Run Office style programs

Built in Wireless
2gb+ Processor
2gb Ram (Or ability to upgrade 1gb cheaply)
Reasonable Hard drive

Budget upto £800

Computer hardware knowledge is fairly limited so any suggestions?

£800 is not a bad budget, for that money you could get a decent HP/Compaq.

Second vote for Dell.

I recently bought a Vostro 1700, all singing & all dancing for £600 - blinking well chuffed with it.

3Gb Ram,
Core 2 Duo 2Ghz
8600GT
etc.

at the time, similar spec laptops on ebuyer were about £1200.

Third vote, Inspiron 1720, shade over £600, well pleased.

Core 2 Duo 2GHz
2Gb RAM
8600GT
Upgraded 17" widescreen (1920x1200)
Bluetooth
WLAN
etc..

More dell support than I expected....

2nd question then:

Where's the best place to buy?

Being a "Computer Numptie" I'd probably end up at PC World

3rd Question:

What's a good processor to get? (Core 2 etc - Not that I know what this means...)
Is a Higher no always best?

Had a quick look at these - Pretty reasonable.

They come with warranties from dell.
As a poster said before they pretended to be a business to buy one - If you bought a business laptop with business onsite warranty and have a problem - is it valid?

Just specced up a machine (Vostro 1500) on dell site to exactly the same spec on ebay and came up £400 dearer.

I thought dell direct were reasonably priced...

That can't be right surely?

The Vostro 1500s on that ebay link start at £529 - so Dell Direct are £929 for a 1500???

I priced a Vostro 1700 on Dells site today and it was £649 all in delivered?

It had a 2.5Ghz duo, 3Gb RAM, 250Gb Sata hd, 8600GT gf & Office 2007? So a blinking good spec!

I see what I've done, I picked the base laptop and specced that up rather than the most expensive one with hardly any changes...

I'll have another look then!!

I love this thread keep it coming!

Personaly from bitter experience cleaning up for customers who purchased dell server equipment and filling the gap with HP equipment i'm all too aware of the deep rooted hate that is everpresent for DELL equipment.

That being said however my sister has a vostro and my mum has an inspirion and they both work really well, no issues and a bargain, but it was always the longevity past the three year stretch that set them apart from the rest so time will tell.

In car terms it would be like buying a Skoda for me, awesome car and built to higher standards than VW's but i couldn't part with the cash

I concur with that one.

Acer make pretty good hardware at that end of the market.

Athlon/Turion may suit too - they tend to be cheaper than Intel.

Actually

*whispers*

The few Dell laptops I've had experience with have been okay.

But Toshiba - can't fault them

No disrespect to the Skoda man, they are quality pieces of kit. I had a Seat Leon Cupra before, the Cupra T so it was the 180BHP model and i had fun with a vRS and Mini Cooper S and Civic R around the woodmansterne area in surrey, fiercely fought part of the performance market that the 200BHP mark, loads of cars out now with that power.. I remember when my MK2 GTI 8v was the daddy.... Until i ran into a Pulsar

Hangon i remember getting embarrased by an Uno Turbo as well..... what a baked bean tin that was.. but it sure moved quick.
