Default Internet connection help

Need some help as something has gone mad with my laptop wireless connection.

Have a Toshiba laptop that is connected to a Netgear DG834GT wireless also can access via Hawking Extender.

Altered the security over the weekend then things went bad, have removed all security on Netgear and Hawking, however even though it shows I'm connected to the Net, neither Outlook or IE can gain access, Skype still works fine.

What have I done to cause this.

Also have removed Kaspersky as I thought this could have caused the problem.

Vista SP1 has also been installed.

Any help much appreciated as it is very annoying

Start with this stuff - this should tell you where the issue is. If you can ping 127.0.0.1 and the laptop's IP then the NIC is working. If you can ping the router then it's not the firewall etc. If you can ping a remote site (say the BBC) by IP but not domain name then it's a DNS issue. If you can't ping remote sites at all, then it's the router or your ISP.

But knowing that router (I used to have one), the very first thing I'd do is turn it off for a few minutes, then power it up again.

Thanks for this, very useful

Did all the pinging, appears DNS fault, changed and it's working fingers crossed.

Pinging in order:

127.0.0.1
The IP of the laptop
The IP of the router (usually 192.168.0.1)
The IP address of the BBC
The name bbc.co.uk

at what point do you fail to get a connection?

On the TCP/IP properties on the network properties page, are the IP address and DNS addresses set to be obtained automatically?

Does the router have access by MAC address? If so, is the laptop listed?

The machine working fine yesterday afternoon and first thing this morning. It had been restarted 3 times yesterday no problems.

It was left on all night, no problems this morning until I restarted it, now on Local connection.

Have done the Ping in the order above, it's failed at Ping 212.58.224.131

The TCP/IP are set to Auto

What about your DNS setting? That's what screwed me last time for certain connections (on same modem/router). It's pretty buried, but make sure it is in auto on the PC to try. D

I've restarted the laptop for the third time, it's now working OK. Think it must have something to do with the Auto DNS as when I check the status it shows the router IP whereas before it was showing the PlusNet IP. Which should it have.
Wondered if doing a factory reset on the router would solve it else chuck it out the window, if the later what router should I replace it with.

Good glad I the IT guru helped!

That Netgear is meant to be OK - just make sure you have the latest firmware in it, and mount it on its side to let the heat out... D

A factory reset will cause more problems than it solves - but if you haven't done a power-cycle (remember to leave it off for at least fifteen seconds) then do so. As Diesel says, those routers have a habit of overheating. This was partly cured by firmware upgrades (make sure you have the latest, as he says) but not totally. I never found putting it on its side made any difference.

But power-cycling cures about ninety percent of problems with those.
