Ghost image

Does anyone know how to use bloody ghost ?? Used it a few time a number of years ago and just tried it again, but can't make it work!! Last time I used it, I was in Bristol at home and pulled a laptop image from my IT department in Woking, via our corporate WAN / LAN / 2 meg link straight onto a laptop. I remember thinking at the end when prompted to reboot the laptop, I thought this will never work but it did. I can't seem to make it do basic operations like make an image file LOL
I have a 40 gig HD that has two partitions (51/49%), I can't ghost an image to the local drive as it errors out, i.e. image C: onto D:\image.gho. Almost like it trying to image c: and d: drives onto d:
Fair enough, so I fire up the LAN via a hub, enable file sharing on both PCs, they can see each other. Turn firewall off, cause I was getting boxes popping up. My main PC I set to master, the other PC set to slave, and NOTHING!!!!!
I'm really getting pissed off with it now, any ideas ?
Cheers Phill C (the drama queen having a blond day)
PS Do I need to map the drives in explorer ?

Fast bloke,
Yes loads of space space on both partitions, really getting me annoyed now. I have another three machines to do and really need to ghost then rather than load disks

IIRC Ghost doesn't like making images to the same physical disk.
I have a small HDD that i plug into the IDE controller as a slave device and just dump teh image onto that using the Ghost DOS bootdisk

I use the boot disk. The other one is a bit dodgy as Windows could be messing with files as you image.
I have used it with the option of Partition to File before fine. Can't remember any problems though.
I use the corporate edition now and can image to and from our dedicated image server.

Using ghost ver 6.03 ? I think....
So if a get a small drive make it bootable and put the ghost.exe on there, do you think that will work ?
Cheers Phill C
PS Drama'ed right up now, why did I bother partitioning the HD!!!

Make sure you only ghost the partition and not the disk. As described earlier the floppy will work better. Windows won't get in the way if you are ghosting, say, a second partition, but don't try and ghost the partition that contains the OS you are using (ie. C drive)

Yes but can't seem to get DOS in ME ??? from the C: drive. I'll try a boot disk, but don't reckon it'll work
Anyway that's the whole point I want to image the C drive... No options in ghost to just see the primary partition

Use the ghost application in windows to create a bootable floppy which will run straight into the ghost utility once u boot from it, no need for dos etc, the boot disk goes straight in. Once booted from floppy choose to image a partition and not disk, choose the first partition to create image from and then select the 2nd partition as the destination. Make sure you choose to use least file compression and quickest image creation. It should do it very quickly even on a 20gb partition. Once you have sorted this and got it working it will be the best way of backing up your whole system/os to restore after any disasters. If you have any specific error messages or questions email me and i'll try and help! Ghost is a superb app once mastered. Don't try using a network as its too much hassle and a lot slower for obvious reasons, and u have to make a bootable ghost network disk which involves putting your nic drivers on it and it becomes a pain.

Ahhh,
Looked at the netgear site today for updated drivers and found a patch for ghost Thought it was strange so downloaded it. Using all netgear cards in all machines. Is that it ?
Make a boot disk with ghost!! I must be missing something here, I've got about four option ??
And making a boot disk ME / 98se that uses your NIC card drivers to connect to a remote PC in dos, isn't hard.....
Not getting pissy just don't understand.
Two down, two to go.... I reckon now that I got two PCs networked, both with partitions, then it will work

Making a boot disk with Ghost is not an option within Ghost. its a separate start menu item, Boot Disk Wizard IIRC, not sure it's available in all versions and types of Ghost. The "evaluation" copies often don't have it. Hic.

I haven't got that option in 6.03, and as far as I'm aware this isn't a demo version...
How large is the whole program ?
Cheers Phill C
PS Two done, two to do, but I'll take the H/D out the other two and try it across an IDE cable.

Silent Monkey,
Surely if I make a boot disk with the Ghost.exe file on it that should be ok, shouldn't it ?
I'm going to get the HD out the other two machines and stick them in machines I've done and give that a try.....
Just can't understand why ghost can't deal with the partitions
Cheers Phill C

I love Ghost. It has saved me on many occasions.
I have Ghost.exe (Version 6.0 659 Kb) on a standard boot disk.
1. Boot up from floppy and run ghost.
2. select Local > Partition > To Image
3. Source drive is the entire hard drive
4. Source patitions from drive 1 (part 1)
5. File name to copy image to (tab up to Look in and use drop down menu to select D: Local drive.
6. Tab down to File name and give it a name
7. I don't run compression because it is quicker without.
8. Proceed with partition dump.
I know this looks really complex when written down but honest it's not. The real spanner in the works could come if 6.03 has a different front end.
I am going to look at another car (Fiat Panda) but I will install 6.03 when I get back and let you know what I find.

Oh dear more drama!!!
When I've ghosted the image onto the second disk, and fit in machine. Worked for about five mins then went **** on a reboot. Hard disk failure ???
If I mount disk in first machine and load windows it can see all the files fine. I don't understand!! Any advise ?
Looks like I won't be getting my thorn goggles on as early as I thought.
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of magic setting 2k, to stitch up the start bar, etc ??
Cheers Phill C
PS I'm assuming that ghost will sys the disk ? But it did boot fine
