Assuming the router is working, it sounds like DNS isn't working. Did you have a manually set DNS lookup, or just ticked the "Obtain DNS address automatically" option?

Type in your browser window:

http:// 212.58.224.131

(do not put in that space after the // - it's to stop the BBS parsing the IP address!) and click the go button. What happens? If you get the BBC, it's DNS. If not, ping the IP from a DOS window and see if it connects.

I would start from the beginning.

Run CMD in the run menu to bring up the Command Prompt.

Type IPCONFIG and hit enter.

See what your IP is. If its 192.xxx- then chances are your connected to your router.

Type PING BBC.CO.UK and see if you get a reply. If you do its a browser or firewall issue,

If not try PING 212.58.224.131

If you do then its DNS if still no reply your computer isnt connecting to the internet.

Try PING and then the IP from IPCONFIG.. 192. thats the router. NO reply means no connection to the router. Reply means your router is probably blocking the internet.

rmay be off the beaten track with this, but have you just installed windows media player 11 and the media player 11 sdk and other related updates.

I accidently did this at the weekend on my legit copy of media centre, and after install I couldnt access any webpages. Was still connected to my router and that was connected to the internet.

Once un installed, everything worked again. I actually re installed it again and got the problem back so it was definately that what caused my prob. May be worth looking into it.

Virus was still here so i wiped the Pc clean after backing everything up, now it will work via an ethernet cable but not wireless again!

I may delete the built in wireless and try a cheap card.

I wonder if media player 11 is causing widespread probs?

I've been having mega issues since i updated to service pack 1 on vista. WMP 11 is embedded in vista and cant be un-installed. I also cant access my control panel the normal way and am having boot issues.

Sorry to hijack your thread and not really help but perhaps this is the source of our probs? Trying to get help from ms is like
Might just go back to xp!

okay for your wireless if it is a built in jobbie they are generally good (I prefer internal to the external usb/pmcia type)

Connect via the ethernet and get the upto date drivers for the wireless card, then you will need to access the router settings, find the channel number, wep (or whatever security) and match this on the inbuilt card. Once done you should be okay again wirelessly

Sorry, to add to that, depending on your router, it may only have a few ips via the inbuilt dhcp server, I have a thomson and it logs the machine names that access it. I recently did a reformat with xp media centre and I had to delete the old computer name in there (I renamed my computer on the re install) which then freed up an ip address for my wireless adapter
