Default transferring files from external hard drive

evening all, i hope im not the only one up at this time...?!

im at work on nights and one of the boys here needs some help...

hes got an old hard drive running xp hooked up to a vista laptop and hes trying to transfer the files but when he does, there are loads of permission issues and hes having to transfer them one at a time after altering the permissions...with 30 odd gig to transfer this is going to take ages...

does anyone know why this is and know a way to sort it...?

cheers in advance,

bri.

Sounds like NTFS security issues. I.E the old XP disc will have files from a specific user such as Administrator perhaps, that don't tally with the user(s) on VISTA.

A quick google search found this and may help:

Copying XP files to Vista cannot complete due to permission error - Vista Forums

It is not the UAC security ?

Maybe turn this off, reboot and try again ?

he XP permissions will mean diddly squat to Vista, unless the XP OS is still running, as they are controlled by the original OS as long as it still running

If the drive is in a caddy there wont be any permissions, the only permissions there will be is in the folder your trying to copy to within Vista

I get permissions issues deleting folders in Vista, it isnt a permissions issue as such its actually a bug that is still present in SP1

Good old MS you gotta love them
