Unhappy Sick pc- graphics card knackered?

Turned on my pc (p4, 3.4 ghz) this morn to find vertical lines on the monitor right from the bios screen. Vista boots to bsod every time, but manages safe mode, again with vertical lines down screen. I suspect the graphics card is on its last legs ( aging nvidia fx5700) but no way of testing it.

So before I shell out for a new card, anyone any suggestions for what else to try?

Ta

Always worth checking your RAM, but it does sound video related.

Have you cleaned out the heatsync & reseated the card?

If you have an AGP slot then that would be a better option. Plenty of cheap AGP cards to be had:
