Default Outlook backups

I've backed up loads of (vista) Outlook messages. How do you import them back into Outlook?
The Import option doesn't seem any use, and if drag and drop, some copy, across, but mostly they just copy themselves into a new message, rather than the inbox

How have you backed them up? Normally you use the 'export' option and save them as an encrypted .pst file would allow you to import them in again, and have the option to not to duplicate everything.

the Export option just gave me a MAPI error of no use, so I ended up just copying them onto a flash drive.
