Free online storage space
Does anbody use it and do you trust that your data is safe and isn't looked at?
I'm tempted to sign up to the free 5gb being offered by Microsoft and backup all my digital photos and videos of my kids/family so that they will never be lost. Still have the issue at home that they could be lost forever being stored on multiple hard drives through a house fire or electrical spike etc (even though extremely unlikely).
I do have trust issues though with using online backups that your data isn't browsed or seen by the company offering the storage. Is this wrong and the storage is 100% trustworthy?

You can use the free version of Mozy Online Backup: Simple, Automatic, Secure (which is up to 2gb) or $4.95 a month for unlimited.
It is encrypted and supposedly secure.

I currently use this
Free Online Backup – IDrive – Encrypted, Secure and Automated!
First 2gb is free also.
I've also had to use the restore facility too.

Because that is still physical media which can corrupt/scratch/get destroyed and that's what I want to avoid. Pictures of my kids growing up are irreplaceable. I want it on a backup media that can be recalled at any time that isn't subjected to failure (which online wont be due to expensive redundany measures that any large company have in place).
Thanks to all the other online suggestions, I will take a look at them.

Until a few weeks ago I hadn't played with online storage, but it is great. My PC crashed, I re-installed Vista and then all my documents, pictures and music copied back after a few hours.

Any company can go bust very quickly if the market turns, lets face it most of these companies wont be around in 20yrs, how long do you want your treasured pics for ?
Just dump them on disc, on a backup hdd and print them out and even a backup usb pen if you're that worried. Or upload them to a server which for all you know can and will be accessed by every tom dick and harry working for that company.
If you want to go the MS route then use hotmail, i'd assume that should be reasonably secure.

Its the hotmail related one i'm looking at, the SkyDrive and I bet a tenner Microsoft will still be here in 20 years tme The Mozy one looks better as it has encryption though so will look at both. Going to take ages to upload though with only standard ADSL. May buy a second external hdd as well but a Blueray burner is too much money at the moment.

Not being funny, but have you considered printing all your pics.
With 6x4 at a penny each, get the lot done and have a few sessions of making up albums.
Technology is great but nothing beats browsing an old album in years to come.

Didn't realise you could get them for a penny each. Where is that as only ever used photobox?

Jsut checked and didn't quite read the small print, sorry was basing on mailshot I sw last week.
6p a print up to 500 and 1p a print for prints 501-1000.
FOTO.com United Kingdom : Photo printing, Digital photo developing : Prices
Still not bad tho and I have to say, I get more prints now than I ever did with film and it's terrific getting them back, sorting them out and sticking them in albums.
My 10yo nephew got a camera and printer last week for birthday and we gave him the consumables for 200 prints and an album and he just loves sowing te album off.
We have gone slightly OT but on screen just isn't the same and I agree you should do what you can to make sure your "negatives" are safe but my feeling is the pictures are for enjoying, not just archiving.
