Default Best £500 laptop revisited hp v dell LOL :)

I need a laptop to handle home stuff and some light (12 year old) gaming

I was thinking about a Dell but my new desktop is HP

How do HP score on the laptop front ?

HP DV9646EM Laptop - Buy cheap HP laptops including the HP DV9646EM at PC World.

Hi Shaun, if we are talking Notebook market shares, the 3rd quarter 2007 market share results can be seen here:
Acer, After Acquisitions, Passes Dell in Notebook Market Share - IT Channel - IT Channel News by CRN and VARBusiness
In short they are:
21.4 % HP
16.2 % Acer
13.8 % Dell
9.1 % Toshiba
8.9 % Lenovo
5.6 % Sony
4.7 % Fujitsu-Siemens
4.6% Apple
4.2 % Asus
I know that HP has increased it's share even further in its 4th quarter 2007 and is about twice as big as Dell.
Cheers, Daniel

HP - bought one 2 weeks ago from HP online. They usually have an offer of the week - this is the one we bought.

HP Media Center G6032EA Notebook PC (GZ974EA#ABU) specifications - HP Home & Home Office products

Register with HP for a further £40 off and buy through quidco for another 5% cashback - ended up £345 delivered or thereabouts.

cos Dell's support sucks big time, the overall user experience of the hardware on HP seems to be better. There is little to compare them on specs and price wise, Dell wins hands down, but HP just seems to have a better all round look and feel, support, warranty etc over Dell. Just my opinion of course and the fact that we havent used or recommended them to any of our clients in over 15 years might have some influence

I can only speak for the HP business notebooks not consumer. Here are a couple of short clips, showing aspects like Security, Ease of Use and Reliability of the latest generation of HP's business notebooks...Why buy an HP notebook (HP Public Sector) ... I specifically like the clips covering the reliability and security features. In our last customer presentation, my boss stood on one of these professional notebooks to show the strengths of the chassis. In addition to this demonstration we spilled water over the keyboard of a running notebook for over 45 minutes (as long as our presentation went) and it did not damage the notebook due to its superb laminated keyboard. The water is channeled to get out of the notebook through the optical drive and therefore doesn't get damaged. I am not going to bad mouth our competitors, therefore I am focusing on what HP notebooks can actually deliver.

cool, all nice info.

In the past we have always used Dell, but their service is getting lower over time. More and more we are passed to Indian call centres, which I find very irritating. They have even done this to us on our business account.

We've found the Dell laptops to be quite solid, but both of our last ones made annoying/irritating noises that are clearly audible in a quiet environment.

I've been considering giving HP a shot at my upcoming laptop, just to see what they are like. Will be a few months before purchase, so lots of time to look around still

How about this, its a good spec for the money and a 17 inch screen. The seller seems to be a trusted ebay user with good feedback.

Shaun, the difference between that ebay user that i posted about who was asking for an £850 postal order and the one i have posted in the link above is that the user i highlighted only had an 11 rated feedback with one bad rating already and was asking for an £850 postal order, the seller in the link i posted above has the following well respected user rating which is 3002 ebay deals and a 99.6% positive feedback.

Seller: handbag71( 3002)
Feedback: 99.6% Positive

Yeh mate, he has sold 3002 items currently on ebay and a 99.6% rating on their feedback is excellent and would give you a lot of confidence as a buyer.

Also if you look at the listing he provides his business VAT number, you only have to click on his rating number to view the amount of happy customers that have bought laptops from him.

Shaun

Check out this one i have just built on the Dell website for you for just £539 + VAT, its a lot a lot of spec including a T8300 Core Duo processor which is very fast, a Nvidia GeForce 8600 graphics card, 250GB Hard Drive over 3GB of RAM and its a 17 inch screen. With Dell you can build your own spec and change it to how you want.

On the link just change the graphics card to the 256 MB Nvidia GeForce® 8600M GT and you will see the price change at the top right to £539 + VAT which is a cracking deal for all that.

Its a better spec than what the guy on Ebay is offering for similar money.

I have had HP's & Compaq's and Dells both for work and home

The last couple of HPs I have had one of them was an NX6000 which was a really good laptop never faltered once in the 2 years I threw it round everywhere

I currently have a new HP 6715b AMD Turion 64x2 running Vista 64 bit Ultimate with 4Gb Ram I can run 3 or vmware machines inside it and it still runs great (thats Windows 2003 server 32bit as a domain controller, windows 2003 server 64 bit with Exchange 2007, XP Pro 32 bit, MAC OSx86 Tiger, and Linux XP Desktop) only time it slows down a bit is hard disk access

I have of my own a Dell Latitude D610 currently running Mac OSX86 Tiger and Photoshop, Ive had it at least 3 years and its never been turned off and still works like it did the day I bought it, missus has got a Dell Latitude D600 which is sort of on its last legs, but has been thrown about a bit and about the same age as my Dell

Ive had older Dell's with work and they have both been fine, never skipping a beat either

I have been more than happy with both Dell & HP, and if I had to choose again now, I think I would actually buy a Macbook (which I am looking into doing)
