shared is someone else uses the server, dedicated means you have your own physical server - Can be more secure and is more flexible.

Linux is hosted on linux! and probably Apache, windows is hosted using IIS.

Depends what language you write your web site in.. asp.net will only run on windows.. php, jsp etc can run on either (can run apache, tomcat on windows)

Just out of Interest how big a site do you plan to create 50pm sounds very low cost of an adult site.

£50 per month for complete control and dedicated without a hardware cost is very good value. Part of the Pipex family too, that's where we host some servers...

 

Dedicated could mean you have your own virtual server not a physical one.

Dedicated hosting - you rent a whole server 'dedicated' to you.

Shared hosting - you rent space/bandwidth on a server on which an unknown number of other sites are also hosted.

Managed dedicated server - a dedicated server on which all security updates and upgrades are applied by the hosting provider and a number of other servies are provided depneding on the package e.g backups, adding new sites, email users etc. etc.

Unmanaged dedicated server - server supplied as a box with base operating system on it. Up to you to build, configure and manage server including keeping it upgraded for security fixes etc. This option is much cheaper than a managed server but you need to know your stuff.

Adult hosting will cost a bit more than standard and can be had in the UK (for UK legal material) but I wouldn't even look at the UK due to silly bandwidtn charges.

The US or Europe is where it's at. You have to remember that with adult site the traffic is huge in comparison to most other genres and hence the bandwidth costs will be much higher hence the monthly rate will be much higher. You also need a fast server with good network burst speeds as adult surfers will not wait for their content and will vote with their feet if things run too slow too often.

In terms of oeprating system Linux servers are supplied with Linux and usually Apache/PHP/MySQL Apache is the webserver, PHP is the scripting language and MySQL is a database.

Windows hosting is usually a bit more expensive and uses IIS (Microsoft's webserver) with various scripting options and databases.

I should stick to Linux/Apache - tried, tested and bombproof compared to Windows as well as generally cheaper.

If you are serious about adult hosting I doubt you will be looking at less than £100 per month for hosting charges and you also need to think about brute force attack protection and password trading protection as either of those can eat you monthly bandwidth in a day.
