Default Old G5 Mac won't start after updates

I'd left my old G5 Mac with my ex - but she's managed to break it in a number of weeks!

She claims to have run the Software Update app and downloaded/installed all recommended updates. Now it won't start up.

Grey screen with Apple logo with spinning disc appears (as if starting in 'safe' mode), then the screen goes blue and a smaller spinning disc appears. Then it hangs.

Any ideas? Other than hooking it up to another Mac with a firewire cable, getting all the files off it and then rebuilding?

(I used to know all the tricks with Macs (zapping the PRAM!) but the last couple I've had have never gone wrong - so have no idea what to do!)

start it up in safe mode. Hold the shift key down. If that dosent work, then have you got the startup disc for it ? If you have then try booting up with that.

Tried putting the CD in and rebooting but it just ignores it. Think it is going into safe mode even without pressing shift.

Ok, reboot, wait for the bong, hold down Alt/Option key and keep it held down until you see the boot manager screen (blue screen with buttons showing bootable drives). Pop in your boot disk, click the round arrow button (refresh disk list), it should then display the CD as a bootable item, select it and click the right facing arrow (continue) and it should boot from the CD. When you get into the installer, go to the Utilities menu and run Disk Utility, get it to check permissions and repair the disk, then try rebooting and see what happens.

It won't be going into safe mode without shift, if it were, it'd get to the login window and display "Safe Boot" underneath. I don't know of anyway to make it safe boot without holding down shift.

It's not running 10.5 is it? If so, it might be a problem with unsaintity's APE (but I'd have expected to see this problem as soon as you've upgraded to Leopard).
