OK Try this out for a bit of fun. It will also be interesting to see what the older chips are capable of against the newer chips.
The overclockers amongst you will be familiar with this program Super Pi SuperPI - 1.1e Download - EXTREME Overclocking
Once you've downloaded the program, press the calculate tab on the top left and set it to 1M so that we are all playing on the same cricket field so to speak. Try and shut down as many background programs as you can.
I'll begin
Its crap ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz overclcocked to 3233MHZ.
![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v354/andrewdelvard/SUPERPI.jpg)
To get this into perspective some of the quick chips will manage it in around 11-12 seconds.
Results Table
1) Tobisausage Q6600 GO Oc'd 3Ghz 17 secs
2) DJ Dunk Athlon 64 X2 4200+ @ 2.2Ghz 42 secs
3) andrewdelvard Intel Pentium 4 Oc'd 3233Mhz 49 secs
4) NeilT Intel Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz 60 secs
will update later today

For a more modern comaprison, I just tried it on my work laptop, and it did the whole thing in about 23 seconds.
That's a Intel Core2 T7600 running at 2.3Ghz (64bit Vista).
Will try it on my machines at home later

I couldn't be bothered to stop AV progs and everything else that I have running on my machines, and just ran it - as is... Results:
Old machine - Stock Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8Ghz), 768M RAM under XP : 1m 8s <yawn>
Laptop - Stock Intel T5500 (1.66GHz), 1GB RAM under XP: 34s <Hmmm...>
Vaguely recent machine - Stock E6600 (2.4Ghz), 2GB RAM under Vista: 21s <more like it>
Most of the way through, on the E6600, the seconds matched the loops - until the last loop...
Actually, it's not a great test of MODERN processors, as the app is only a single thread - and therefore will only ever use a single core.

14 secs on my Q6600 @ 3.3Ghz with everything running that was running, Thunderbird/Firefox/DevTools/Virus checker......
Only uses 1 core though, a real benchmark should shaft them all

Doesn't seem to be a very good benchmark. Looking at my processor usage while the benchmark was running, only one core was being used (because the app is single threaded) and the core that was being used was only running at about 50% capacity...

Would be interested in your temps to see how well my cooler is working. Pref with standard cooler also if you already have that working. My mobo is Asus P5K-E.

Well i can get my q6600 to 3.4ghz stable but there's no game that pushes it not even crysis as that only uses 1-2 cores at best.
Just getting older so i just like enjoying what i have rather than chasing for the highest stats, been there done that.

What did you get cooler wise as I stuck an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro on mine and didnt bother with Intels bundled HS. My E8400 runs at 25c stock and the highest Ive seen is 27c after about 3 solid hours of Crysis (which I know is GPU intensive but still).

I got the Tuniq Tower 120 - with the stock Intel it hovers around 40C on full load (not clocked at all)
Only problem I have is that I have to completely dismantle the whole damn thing as it needs a backplate on the mobo (Abit IP35 Pro)

Not tried FSX with the service packs installed then? Doesn't max all 4 cores out all the time but does for significant periods.

I too suffer the backplate issue for mounting my Thermalright HSF. In addition, to clean my heatsink properly I need to remove it once in a while. The screws that hold the HSF on also go into the backplate. If the backplate nut is looser than the HSF screw the backplate comes off before the heatsink

Just tried it the works computer (test set at 1M)....
31 seconds: Intel e6300 (2x1.86Ghz) 1gig 667Mhz RAM. All Standard timings.
Oddly, it only uses 50% of the processor's resources, and it was the same time when I tried the test whilst I was doing some other stuff (including a AV scan) in the background...hmmm![Ponder2](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/ponder2.gif)
Home system is overclocked, but all the fans (5 of the sodding things) all run at a minimum speed, so isn't any noiser and it doesn't run that much hotter than normal - no tarty heatsinks either, and that's when stress testing with Prime 95 (running three sessions simultaneously).
The noise from the voltage regulator coils on the m/board and PSU, plus the hard drives make more noise.
