Default recommend a good dvd writer (black bezel)

I've got a Samsung SH-S203B dvd drive at the moment, but the bloody drive tray keeps sticking when ejecting / inserting disks.

Are plextor still the hound's rounds / dog's bollox / mut's nuts ?

Not really, overpriced for what they are nowadays as the competition didn't take long to catch up.

Got a samsung sata lightscribe and it's been great, fast, quiet and no coasters all you could really want in a drive.

I read somewhere that Plextor dont even manufacturer their own these days and just use someone elses unit rebadged.

Ive always gone with Pioneer and never had any probs. Will be adding their black bezel SATA one to my new build.

I recently got a NEC Optiarc Dual layer, everything apart from blueray etc. Dont be put off by the name it is actually a division of Sony. It is good with the cheaper media, and touch wood not had a failed burn yet (with cheaper media) would keep clear ot liteon though as I have one and the write speed is poor on the cheaper media (even when the media states 16 speed max I could get was 8)

Most drives start life like that, you'll usually find a firmware upgrade unlocks various media to the correct burn speeds.

Yeah I know, drive was updated with the latest, and I even had a hacked firmware from the cdr freaks forum but it was still dire

Luckily it speeds things up though when copying 1 dvd straight to the other just do all my burning on the optiarc

Last NEC I had was my 3xi MultiSpin CD-Rom back in 199x, running at a magnificent 3x

Nice bit of kit - put the CD into a cartridge, put cartridge in drive.

Stay away from Philips. Works fine but the dvd tray is really poor quality and the movement is sloooow....
