Mac - AV & MSN chat client?
Hi,
Just wondered which ones you guys use, if any?
Looking at using Adium as a chat client - anyone use it?
I know I can get Norton for OS X, but is that the one to get?
Cheers, Alex
PS quite pleased with my new iMac

Hello Alex,
I've used Adium for quite a few years now and it really is rather good. I use in place of MSN/Windows Messenger as the interface for that is just so large and clunky, plus of course Adium supports multiple protocols.
As for AV, to be honest you don't really need it for the OS X side of things. I've not run AV on my macs since about 10 years ago and I've not had a problem. The real issue is a mac user accidentally sending an infected file to a PC user. Yes, AV would prevent this, but the PC user should really have some form of AV running to prevent themselves getting infected. I do run AVG and Ad-Aware 2007 in my bootcamp partition (and on my PC's), but as said the Macs are AV free.
If you must have AV then try clamxav (OS X version clamav) as Norton for Mac is well known to be nearly as problematic as the PC version. Other products would be Virex and Sophos AV.

Cheers guys
Spent the morning setting it up and migrating files from my PC (which is being retired).
Downloaded Adium, but ran out of time before work tonight. Will report back on how I find it.
As for AV, probably leave that be for now.
OSX 10.5 seems pretty good, some nice visual changes to the dock and seems to run well enough with core2 duo and 2gb

As Markus (The Guru) says, AV just isn't needed. Make sure you create an admin account with a different username and password, then switch off admin privileges to you main every day account. That way all attempts to run installers or download apps will require admin authorisation. It takes a fool to authorise the two current Mac virus' doing the rounds. One is embedded in a jpeg, so why would that need authorisation ? The other is usually stumbled upon when viewing **** when a click on a clip will hotlink you to a website advising you to download the latest QT codec in order to view. NEVER download from a place you don't know ! I've not had AV in 10 years and never had a virus.

Alex, GROWL is a notification manager application. There are quite a few applications that will use it to show notification messages. I've got it installed and have never had a problem with it, so I'd say go for it and let it be installed.
