When you say VOIP do you mean fully intgrated as per BT HomeHub - or do you mean a VOIP service, like, say, Skype.
If its the latter, then yes it will be fine - Get a headset and maybe a webcam, get the person in oz to get a headset, and maybe a webcam - Get Skype on both machines and away you go.

The Speedtouch router you get with BE is enabled for Voip. I plug my normal phone into it using SIP, you then just need to set up an account with a supplier, I use VoipDiscount | Free Calls and SMS they give details on how to set up the router with your phone.

I use sipgate very good and you get a number, its now our only landine at home... £5.90 = 1000 mins per month... and we've got Siemens Dect coordless phones that connect to Sipgate... kid has one so it doesn't cost me a fortune her being on phone to BF all the time... :-)

I use Sipgate as well, and have a local 01892 number for free with them. BE's router comes with VoIP ports so you can just plug in a normal phone.
If her sister also signs up to Sipgate or an equivalent then the call will be free. Otherwise just use Utilities & Phones: International Call Checker for a normal phone and Australia is only 1p a minute.

If it's just for the odd call don't go signing up and paying for anything, lots of messenger products will do the trick and the quality's not to be sniffed at with the proliferation of good quality broadband.
I use Skype extensively and can't praise it enough.
