Tried to fit new memory stick to PC but doesn't work?
Hi - computer numpty here but willing to 'have a go' (not sure if that's a good thing or not! Bought a PC-133 memory stick (or whatever it's called) to upgrade the memory of my aging PC - it's exactly the same as the one that came out originally - same number of contacts along the bottom - 3 blocks of increasing numbers of contacts etc and fitted into the slot the old one came out of, no problem - then, nothing. Screen just showed the line of white bars at the bottom of the screen and that was it.
Any ideas please...

PC133 doesn't have to be in pairs.
Does the PC function normally if you plug the old stick of memory back in?
As you've admitted to being a computer numpty, how did you guarantee you were buying the right memory?

Hi - PC works fine when I put the old stick back in. Bought the exact same style of stick PC-133 and number of contacts at the bottom, just 512 instead of 256 so assumed it would be OK. Was off Ebay but from power seller etc so thought it should be kosher.

This may help:
Your machine may require a BIOS (or firmware)
upgrade to recognize the larger amount of RAM,
check with your manufacturer’s website (not
your printed instruction manual) for the latest
BIOS information.
Forgot that DIMMs can single and SIMMS are paired. Oh well...

It may be that even in the memory is Kosher, it just doesn't like your system. Some memory can be funny about motherboards etc.
I just buy Crucial in general - gauranteed to work.

The crucial wizard selects the the right timing etc on the memory for your particular board. Might be worth doing it on crucial.com/uk and then checking the result against your memory module.
And as above, a BIOS update may help.
