yeah, that would work.

Remember though, most wireless routers still need one computer connected via a wire in order to set them up. Once the setup is complete then you don't need the wired connection anymore. So in theory, you can then move things around as you wish.

In practice, it is always a good idea to have one computer connected by a wire to your router. Its a lot easier to fault diagnose, setup and update the router.

IMPORTANT - remember to encrypt the networking using WPA. WEP is almost totally useless, and is normally the default as older hardware cannot use WPA.

As it's a desktop machine, I'd guess it'll stay in one location in the house and therefore, the better solution would be these:
Devolo MicroLink dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit

They simply plug into an available electrical socket anywhere around the house, this case in your son's bedroom. The other one plugs into an electrical socket near your Netgear box. Faster and more reliable than wireless technology.

Note, your local PC World sells these.

All depends on what he wants to do I suppose. power socket networking can have issues too.

He mentions it was for a desktop computer - so I'm assuming it'll stay in one place. If it was for a laptop that would be carried around the house, I'd have advised wireless.

I've put loads in for people now - no issues. Are you using Devolo ? Or some other brand ? Always plug into a wall socket - as adapter blocks can vary in quality and reliability.

your warranty should be unaffected by adding a PCI card, it's like buying a car and not being allowed to put petrol in it.

Not true, alot of companies will void your warranty if you open the case, or break a seal which of course will be across the frame and case.
