Hi. Im after more memory for my computer as i currently only have 256 in there-looking at my motherboard book-it can take -

2 pcs pc133 sdram upto 1 gig

or

2pcs ddr266/ddr200 upto 2 gig

i want about 1 gig i think so which memory would be cheapest to go for out of them 2? and which online place tends to be cheapest for memory please?

thanks been to crucial and from scan and a bit of help from me as it didnt know everything seems ddr266 memory is a lot cheaper then pc133sdram memory-im looking at £40 for 1 gig of ddr266-that seem good?

question tho-i cant find anywhere in my motherboard book what voltage my memory runs at-its a p4mfm motherboard if that helps and also can i just junk the 256 that is in there and buy just a single piece of 1 gig and install that or do i need to buy it in pairs? seem to remember years ago on an old computer running EDO memory that u had to install in pairs

Hi. That sounds good. Especially as DDR-266 RAM isn't made anymore.
It appears your PC is at least a few years old. One thing to bare in mind is that the DDR-266 will be a better buy for that PC as it will run quicker. DDR=Double Data Rate. In other words PC-133 will run at 133Mhz whilst the DDR will run at 266Mhz. Also you will need to have a look at what memory module(s) you already have on the motherboard as you cannot mix Memory types. I.e you can only run all PC-133 or run all DDR-266. My guess is that you probably have PC-133 installed. If that's the case you will need to remove this from the Motherboard before installing the DDR Memory. With the question about installing in pairs. For DDR RAM you do not need to do this anymore, the only exceptions are with the newer systems that use DDR-2 & DDR-3 RAM, as in those they have the ability to be placed in paired slots to run quicker by using colour coded memory slots.

at mo according to scan i have a 256 piece of ddr in but i was gonna take that out then and stick a single 1 gig piece in as otherwise only other choice be to buy a 512 piece and place it with 256 to make a total of 768-but im not sure if this be enough as i run XP pro at mo but may update soon to vista-so would 1 gig be better-which actually means i can leave 256 piece in and actually make it a total of 1.256gig

Ummm.. I would seriously stick with Windows XP. What processor are you currently running? The more RAM you can offord the better. What does the Crucial Website offer as a solution? By the way Vista requires at least 512MB RAM just for the operating system and a half decent systems set-up to run nice. I.e A mate of mine was running a P4 3.4Ghz Shuttle PC and found out he had to change his Graphics card to something meatier as Vista didn't support it. I still run XP Pro on a Core-2-Duo setup with 2GB RAM and I am more than happy with the performance.

just a 2 gig pentium processor-my system must be around the 5 year old now thinking back to when i brought it

Then I'd stick with XP. Your system will seriously struggle with Vista.
