Registering a domain name
Is it a legal requirement that when you register a domain name that your name and address is publicly available for that domain name?
Is there any way of buying a domain name and not having your name and address associated with it?

if you buy and say you are an individual you can opt out.
I think this is .co.uk only though - not sure.
I get mine through 123reg.co.uk and it has that option, they are cheap too.

Certainly for uk domains, if you register it as belonging to a private individual, your address does not appear in whois queries.
Unsure about the situation for .com domains though.

It depends who you register the domain with.
Here's a snippet of the whois for my domain:
One thing I'd wonder about though is if you're not showing as the registrant, could you have problems proving you owned the domain?
Here's a snippet of the whois for my domain:
Registrant:
John Singleton
Registrant type:
UK Individual
Registrant's address:
The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to have their
address omitted from the WHOIS service.

As others have said, it does depend on who you register it with. I'm another with Titan and my domain shows my name as the Registrant but the rest of the details are for Titan.
I think it is actually meant to be a requirement that domain registrars show full information on the registrant, but I'm not 100 percent sure on that.
A proposal was put to ICANN to dissolve this requirement, due to privacy concerns due to people data-mining the information from a whois query. ICANN has currently put off this proposal.
There are pro's and cons to the way it works. If you are trying to track down someone the whois info could give you info on who they are, so it's a good thing. If someone is trying to track you down (stalker, spammer, etc...) then it's a bad thing as they get your details. Catch 22 methinks.
John's point about your name not showing up as the registrant is interesting, but the Registrar's details should be shown in the record and I'd have thought they would have the full details on who the domain belongs to, thus you could contact them if you wanted more info.

Be very wary who you register with. Use Enom or UKReg etc so you control the name servers. If the Host controls the name servers it is a complete ar$e to ever leave them and with me it ended up with court action with nominet and the host which would not release MY domain and they had the ******* cheek to argue it was their domain and they could sell it to me if I wished.
